In October 2024, I attended IT Arena in Lviv and Defense Tech Valley in Kyiv to explore Ukraine’s fast-evolving innovation ecosystem. Despite the ongoing war, the economy is rebounding: after a 30% GDP drop in 2022, growth reached 5.3% in 2023 and is projected at 3% in 2024. GDP per capita remains low (around $4,000), and the return of refugees will depend on future economic prospects. The IT sector now accounts for 4.7% of GDP, moving from outsourcing to creating innovative products, yet Ukraine still ranks low in broader innovation indices.

Local startups face funding gaps, making foreign investors essential. Investment opportunities exist through direct investment, angel groups, or specialized funds. IT Arena 2024 gathered 5,000 participants and over 120 startups, including 55 in defense, with a strong collective sense of mission.

Ukraine’s miltech sector stands out for its unique frontline testing cycles, offering a competitive edge. Ultimately, Ukraine has the potential to become a global leader in military and dual-use innovation, driving both reconstruction and European integration.
